It’s not the destination, but the journey
So singers - this is something I feel needs to be spoken about. Once I was part of a group that wrote some pretty cool songs, and one of them had the lyrics ‘it’s not the destination but the journey’. Now, I believe it’s a bit of both when it comes to singing, but the journey should absolutely have the focus. Because this journey is on going. So let’s talk about it…
First and foremost, understand that consistent and continuous practice forms the bedrock of true vocal excellence.
Just like an athlete hones their skills through consistent training, a singer's instrument is developed through the commitment to daily practice. Each session is a vital step on the path to mastering your vocal craft. And that can be as little as 5 minutes a day! But that regular discipline will take you a long way.
What is important to remember, is that this regular practice and commitment isn’t for the goal of a one-time stellar performance - but the ability to consistently deliver with strength and an unmistakable style that is uniquely yours. It’s easy to get caught up on reaching a one time goal and wanting to get their quick. But listen to me when I say - don't overlook the power of the small wins that pave the way for the grand victories. Celebrate each note perfected and every hurdle overcome, for these moments are the stepping stones to your big vocal goal…
and they deserve to be celebrated.
Now, it is important that I say this - in a world dominated by comparisons, it's crucial to focus on your own journey. Recognize that your path is distinct, with its own challenges and triumphs. Rather than measuring yourself against others, embrace your personal growth. Acknowledge your progress, celebrate the obstacles conquered, and be joyous in the fact that your journey is one of a kind.
Ultimately, the true goal is to express your voice with authenticity and emotion, painting your unique story through the art of sound. Every singing lesson, every practice session, every vocal exercise, every small triumph contributes to your journey. Remember, every step, regardless of its size, is a part of your growth and your journey.
So singers, as you continue on this journey, remember that it's not just about the destination, but the joy found in each step along the way. Embrace your progress, celebrate your individuality, and let your voice grow with the strength that comes from dedicated practice.
After all, it's the journey that shapes you into the singer you're destined to be.
