My Go-To in Every Singing Lesson (SOVT’s!)
If you’ve spoken with me before, had a singing lesson with me, or seen my instagram, you would have heard me talk about Semi Occluded Vocal Tract Exercises (SOVT’s ) many times. And I probably will again! But let me go into a bit more detail about the absolute wonders of them and why I use them in pretty much every lesson. So let me jump right in and tell you what they are and why they are so great!
What on Earth are Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract Exercises?
I know, I know, they sound complicated because of the long and technical name! But SOVT’s are not complicated or secretive. Simply put, they involve partially blocking your vocal tract while singing or vocalising, which leads to some astounding benefits. And the best part? They're incredibly enjoyable to practice and you can start doing them today!
Here are just some of the superpowers of SOVT’s:
Unleashing Your Vocal Range: Many singers, like myself, are afraid of the high notes AND the low notes. But with SOVT’S you can unlock your hidden vocal range. From soaring high notes to rich lows, you'll be amazed at the newfound freedom in your voice.
Bye-Bye Tension, Hello Relaxation: Bid adieu to those pesky vocal tensions and say hello to a more relaxed and effortless voice. Semi-Occluded exercises provide a wonderful environment for your vocal cords, perfect for the start, middle and end of the day.
Endurance for Days: Your body needs stamina on a run, and so do your vocal cords when you sing! These exercises strengthen your vocal muscles, giving you the stamina to sing your heart out without feeling winded.
Super Smooth Blending: We singers dream of a voice that can go from low to high and back again with no breaks, crack and flips! SOVT’s are magical as they help you smoothen out the transitions in your voice. Say goodbye to vocal "breaks" and hello to seamless melodies!
So I’ve told you the what and the why of SOVT’s but let’s get onto what you really want to know - the how! Here's a few ways you can dive into the world of Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract Exercises:
The Lip Trill: The go to of so many singers and singing teacher, and for good reason! Practice vocalising while gently trilling your lips; scales, slides, or even the melody to your favourite song! It's an incredibly effective way to start your vocal adventure.
The Singing Straw: Grab a straw (drinking straw, singing straw, both will be beneficial!) and like before, simply go through some scales or a song. Just make sure no air is escaping out the side and you’re good to go!
The Tongue Trill: Just like the lip trill, but with your tongue. It has just as many benefits whilst working a different part of your instrument. Although, I’ll admit, I can’t do this one (so annoying, I know!)
The Creaky M: Take humming, and make it annoying! You want to sound a bit like a creaky door! This will be great for adding extra resistance if you think you’re a bit breathy. Take a scale or song and creak away!

There you have it, singers – the world of Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract Exercises awaits! I couldn’t sing without these exercises, so play about, see which one feels best for you! Embrace the fun, the freedom, and the vocal marvels these exercises bring. And most importantly, always remember that your voice is unique and has its special magic.
